The constant drone in the background coming from various generators almost acts like its own public service announcement letting you know that the power is still out. Its another planned outage from 8am to 4pm. Most of the time ENEE (our national electric provider) provides a notice on Sundays of its planned power outages for the week. Similar to waiting for an author to release a book or a musician to release an album, I find myself waiting for the latest "Calendario de Mantenimientos Programados" to be released so I can scroll through it and see if the hospital made the list.

Each transmission line gets listed with the places it will effect.

Unsurprisingly life goes on almost as if nothing is different. The hospital continues with its usual activities supported by its backup generators. Homes fire up their small generators to keep refrigerators and freezers running. The one area that feels the effect the most is probably the El Camino school. Even in the remote jungle of Honduras, internet and computers are still used heavily to teach the children. Our teachers do a great job of adapting their lesson plans, but another effect that you can't "adapt away" is the lack of ventilation. The school, like most buildings here, is built to take advantage of natural lighting and natural ventilation. However each classroom still has several fans in place to help keep air moving as the afternoon sun shines and heats the rooms up.

We have a goal of changing this with the installation of a backup generator this summer. One of the hurdles that you are always faced with on the mission field is how to fund projects. For this specific project I found myself in a situation of reaching out to our sending churches for help to support the purchase of the generator. Its a lesson for me in giving it to the Lord and trusting Him to help, and for the church community to help. Something I still find challenging to ask. Fundraising will continue, with the goal being to make a purchase next week while Christy and I are in the States and then driving it down to Biloxi for the next container.

Keep after it
