The A Team

"It's our last two batas," Sergio explained to me while holding up a surgical gown of thick rough green canvas. I laughed knowing he ment it as an apology, which I also knew that he knew was completely unnecessary. I stepped into it and it was snapped on me while Sergio held out my surgical gloves.

After the case, I paused to scroll through social media and laughed when I saw Karla's post, remembering to take a quick screen shot.

She had captioned her post "already putting up the tree"

Today, we hit 105 surgeries at Loma de Luz for the month of October thus far. That's 105 people helped and hopefully back on their feet soon. One visiting OB/GYN, and two visiting General Surgeon are primarily responsible for the influx. And our amazing OR team just rolls with it. Granted I know they can't wait for a moment to breath again which things will slow down next week as our last two visitors leave this weekend, but they have been working todo fuerza for a while now. They aren't just techs and circulators, they literally run the whole OR. All the set up, pre-op patients, post op recovery, moving all the patients, all the take down, all the instrument cleaning and sterilization, all the sheets, all the towels (see above "christmas tree"), all the surgical gowns (batas) folded, packaged and sterilized. All the gauze cut, folded, packaged and sterilized. Then while they're keeping the ORs moving they keep an eye on the surgery corner of the hospital for patients waiting to be scheduled for surgery. They run my clinics. All of that, and more, and there's only 7 of them.

Don't just take my word for it. I have had to on more than one occasion shoo away the short-term surgical visitors from trying to steal our techs. Propositioning them to come work with them in the States. Thankfully our techs just laugh and say thanks but no thanks.

I pray God blesses Doris, Rosalinda, Ingred, Karla, Sergio, Carlos and Nelson (and occasionally Jipsy fills in). And I also pray we never loose them!

Much Love.

The other side

This is my view today. Our hospital administration recently did some number crunching. It was prompted by the fact that clinic was overrun the other day, and we had to start triage down at the hospita

When waiting hurts

The surgery is hard to describe. Maybe a waterfall can paint the picture for you. I cut through the skin with a scalpel and in its wake a waterfall of inflammatory fluid gushes from the tissues. Why s
