Para ser Todologo

Taking a short pause in the endless To Do List to relate a leftover story from our past two months in Honduras. I am home from the hospital a tad early today due to a patient not showing up for their procedure. So while Jake is working up a sweat this morning; I am perched a top the lawn mower typing away while simultaneously keeping him company. ;)
Over dinner shared with a few of the Honduran docs and visiting short-term docs one evening, our role as missionaries was discussed. More specifically our role as missionaries in the hospital taking care of patients. The Honduran docs pointed at me as an example and emphasized that I wasn't a surgeon anymore. I am now a "Todologo," they explained. To translate that would be saying that I am now an "Everythingologist." We laughed at the joke, knowing full well, that it was the truth behind the statement making it humorous.
I had tucked the conversation away for potential future use, and it was brought to mind some weeks later. The last week of May a visiting OB/GYN was at Hospital LdL to cover while the missionary midwife, Carolien, took a break to visit her family in the Netherlands. Together we were working through a myomectomy case and the woman with the issue of blood (Mat 9:20-22, Mark 5:25-34, Luke 8:43-48) came up in conversation. Could fibroids have been her pathology, and Jesus healed her. He was a Gynecologist. But he also healed the blind, He was an Ophthalmologist. He made the lame walk again. He was an Orthopedist, or a Neurologist. He repaired a cut ear. He was a Traumatologist, or Otolaryngologist. The list goes on. In short, He was, and is, and always will be the Great Physician. The Ultimate Todologo.
Just out of interest I plugged the phrase "para ser todologo" into Google translate to see how it would be literally translated to English. It came back with "to be whole" And now it is an even greater goal to work towards than before. I pray I can be a bit more like Jesus every day.
Much Love.
